Jim, the central character, is a thirteen year old boy growing up in the Liberties, a bleak run down area of Dublin once settled by Vikings. Home is a one room tenement he shares with his Mom, sister Kath and brothers Steve and Bill. The War has just ended but Dad decides to stay on in the Jim on leaving school finds work at a local butcher's shop where the butcher's wife's infatuations and unwanted attentions towards him begin and end in tragic circumstances. The book also explores how the death of a neighbour's daughter affect his family, his love for his handicapped girlfriend Maria and his decision to leave Ireland.
